Air India

Air India is the flag carrier airline of India. The airline is founded in 1932 (as Tata Airlines) which is owned by that grew into an international airline owned by Air India Limited, a government-owned enterprise.

The airline was founded by J. R. D. Tata as Tata Airlines in 1932; Tata himself flew its first single-engine de Havilland Puss Moth, carrying air mail from Karachi's Drigh Road Aerodrome to Bombay's Juhu aerodrome and later continuing to Madras (currently Chennai). After World War II, it became a public limited company and was renamed as Air India. To gain a competitive advantage in computerized reservation searches, the airline removed the hyphen from its name in 2005 to become Air India. Presently, it is the third largest airline in India in terms of domestic market share.

The recent surge in the COVID-19 pandemic in India has dealt another blow to the country’s economy, and its airline industry has been one of the sectors most affected. India was making good progress in controlling the pandemic before a second wave struck early in 2021. Many other Asia-Pacific countries have suffered from a similar trend, but in India it has been particularly severe. The health system has been overwhelmed by a cumulative case total now exceeding 25 million and almost a million deaths.

This has driven some airlines to seek new investment, while others are looking to ownership changes to increase their long term viability. Travel restrictions have returned as state and central governments grapple with the crisis. While other low cost carriers are preparing to sell shares to sell in their companies to raise the funds to weather the latest COVID-19 spike.

Meanwhile, suitors are preparing their bids to take over Air India; it has still affected their progress. Despite recent delays, however, government and regulatory decisions could clear the way for these deals to proceed this year.
